Brisbane's new, premier dining destination has had a name change.
Formerly known as River Bend, the foodies' haven - home to just‐opened Stokehouse, Cove Bar + Dining, and The Jetty South Bank - will now be known as River Quay.
The inclusion of 'quay' - which means wharf or pier - in the new name is a more accurate reflection of both the maritime history and the attitude of the location, adjacent to the Goodwill Bridge on the former Boardwalk site.
With a small quay currently in place, the area was historically home to the wharves of South Brisbane; a rollicking, boisterous entertainment precinct complete with dancehalls, theatres and restaurants.
Following recent development, driven by South Bank Corporation, the area has been revitalised to create a new precinct with a more refined attitude than its historical one.
"The Corporation not only wanted the name of the precinct to reflect the sense of elegance inherent in riverside dining locations but also the rich history of the place, dating back to the 1800s," said Shane Beecroft, the Corporation's General Manager, Commercial Operations.
With three restaurants currently trading and Popolo scheduled to open in the next few weeks, River Quay is set to become the hottest gastronomic destination in Brisbane when the precinct fully opens in early 2012.
The riverfront green space at River Quay, opened earlier this year, has already become one of the most popular spots in the Parklands to relax and enjoy the spectacular river and CBD vista.
