Picnic Island Green underwent a major upgrade as part of the River Bend project (formerly known as the Boardwalk Redevelopment), including the addition of a contemporary and innovative children's playground, Picnic Island Playground.
The major transformation included the removal of a steep, concrete arch bridge and construction of a new bridge without stairs, rejuvenated open lawn area, pathways, new picnic and barbeque facilities and a new playground positioned under the shade of a fig tree, nestled between Picnic Island and the Arbour.
The upgrade was conceived to draw more visitors to this much under-utilised section of the Parklands and to encourage them to stay for extended periods of time. It also provided a much needed upgrade to the existing barbeque facilities.
The playground has been designed to offer unique play experiences within the Parklands while also complementing the existing play areas. Features include:
- custom designed suspended play plates
- a basket swing for multiple users
- a modernistic slide
- large reflective metal plates
- a cubby house and sand pit
- bouncy soft fall mounds
- an interactive play wall for carers, with in-built finger puzzles
- and a pathway with in-built story.
The playground was opened by Premier Anna Bligh on 16 April 2011.
