Sustainability is a key focus for us and is tightly integrated into our culture and business. We are continually working to develop, implement and maintain exceptional sustainability initiatives and practices.
Our sustainable efforts were recognised in 2011 when we were awarded Bronze Benchmark status by EarthCheck, an international certification program for the travel and tourism industries. South Bank is one of two communities in Australia to be granted EarthCheck status, and one of only six communities worldwide.
To achieve Bronze Benchmark status, we were measured against stringent international standards for sustainability including water and waste management, energy consumption and management of social and cultural impacts of tourism. We were then rated against more than 1000 communities, businesses and governments across 60 countries.
Just some our sustainability methods include:
- Ensuring use of sustainable products. For example, all paper products purchased by South Bank Corporation are either recycled or eco labeled. We also recycle 77 megalitres of stormwater each year through Rain Bank, our stormwater harvesting and reuse centre.
- Requiring that all new developments use renewable or recycled materials and capitalise on energy efficient methods where possible. For example, 80% of Rain Bank was built with recycled materials, while River Quay has bi-fold doors to maximise natural ventilation and reduce the need for air conditioning.
- Using local materials and flora wherever possible. For example, local and indigenous trees have been planted throughout the Parklands and local stones and timbers were used to build River Quay.
- Encouraging energy efficient, active transport to, from and within the precinct. This has been done by creating cycling and walking paths and installing bicycle racks to make getting around the precinct as easy as possible.
- Working with our partners and stakeholders to increase sustainable practices in the precinct. For example, we are currently working on a Sustainable Tenancy Guide that will outline key, easy ways for our retailers to be more sustainable.
